West Roxbury’s Big Hole

West Roxbury Crushed Stone operates a 300 foot deep by 600 foot wide quarry off of Grove Street.  It began providing aggregate stone to the city in 1887.  It has a further life of 25 + years, making it one of the most productive quarry’s anywhere. From roads to buildings, railroads, tunnels, and site development, West Roxbury has provided the base stone.  The stone makes up the base of asphalt and concrete.  In fact there are 4-5 different kinds of stone emanating from the quarry for different uses. The site’s general manager, Ed Sonia, is also a West Roxbury native. The quarry sits on a 52 acre parcel that is private property.

I had not realized that the quarry has provided stone since 1887, but it always amazed me how the quarry kept operating for all these years. I somewhat expected to drive by one of these days to see the stone deminishing, however I am surprised to hear that it apparently has 25+ more years.

Woaw! I didn’t know anything about it other than just drive by it! I am glad you are safe! I was concerned about you falling. But I should have gone with you and take photos. That would be great!
