Urban Coyotes

In my West Roxbury neighborhood, the wild turkeys were once a frequent summer visitor. The summer of 2007 seems to be the year of the coyote. Throughout the area, there have been coyote sightings. One recent afternoon, my neighbor watched and photographed a coyote make it’s way through our backyards and on to Lagrange Street.
Last month, both the Boston Globe and the West Roxbury Bulletin reported that a family of coyotes were seen on Francesca St. in West Roxbury. For now, people seemed to be fascinated to see these animal up close. Experts remind us that attacks on humans are rare, though precautions should be taken with pets and young children. I wonder if the construction on the VFW Parkway may have driven the coyotes out of their leafy homes along the Parkway???

I enjoyed your story about the “urban cowboys” Helen! Amazing that they are now roaming around city neighborhoods!
Hi Helen,
Where did the turket photo come from? I can remember watching a red fox run through my mother’s urban yard when she resided on Pleasant Valley Cir. WR . We both were agog!
In Adams Ma. last week I saw a grouse on the side of the road + a wild turkey in the field where we picked strawberries.
Is that as wild though as my cat yesterday bringing in a live brown bird to my kitchen!!
Hi Helen,
We have seen the coyote almost every day in front of our house. He jumps over my neighbors bushes around 9:15 and then later in the afternoon he comes back again around 4:30 or so. They were interesting to see but having to take the kids in the house every day and having to be on watch every time you leave the house is not really much fun any more. Apparently animal control, etc are not allowed to trap the coyotes so we just have to live with them. I went to the comunity meeting about the coyotes and they basically told us there was nothing they could do and we just had to deal with it. As long a people don’t cover their trash and run away from them, they will stay. We were told to make sure our trash is covered and not put out until the morning of the pick up and we were told to scare them away so they won’t come back. They don’t like loud noises. That is fine, but if your neighbors don’t do the same, they are not going anywhere.
Obviously, I have had enough of the coyotes.
The coyotes are everywhere this year. My cat has disappeared and has not been seen for 2 weeks. I fear she has been killed by a coyote. This is the second cat that I think I have lost to coyotes. There are a real threat!! I spoke to a woman recently who actually witnessed her cat being killed by one and it was traumatic. Watch your kids and your animals!
