West Roxbury’s Big Hole
West Roxbury Crushed Stone operates a 300 foot deep by 600 foot wide quarry off of Grove Street. It began providing aggregate stone to the city in 1887. It has a further life of 25 + years, making it one of the most productive quarry’s anywhere. From roads to buildings, railroads, tunnels, and site development, West Roxbury has provided the base stone. The stone makes up the base of asphalt and concrete. In fact there are 4-5 different kinds of stone emanating from the quarry for different uses. The site’s general manager, Ed Sonia, is also a West Roxbury native. The quarry sits on a 52 acre parcel that is private property.
